About Randy Sanders

Randy SandersRandy Sanders founded Sanders Communications, a media consulting firm located in Lubbock, Texas, in July 2006 following a newspaper career that covered almost 40 years and culminated with six years as editor of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal before he retired from that industry in January 2006.

Sanders Communications serves as a media consultant for political candidates, attorneys, hospitals, universities, and other firms.  Sanders has provided political media consulting for candidates in statewide, regional, and local elections.  In November 2006 one of his clients, County Judge Joe Heflin of Crosbyton, pulled off possibly one of the biggest upsets in two decades of Texas politics when Mr. Heflin, a Democrat, defeated his more heavily funded ($1 million to $250,000) and heavily favored Republican opponent for the Texas House of Representatives by less than 225 votes.

On the state level, Sanders has served as president of both the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors Association and the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas.  He has developed relationships with numerous officeholders, current and retired, including the attorney general of Texas and the longest serving speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.

At the local level, Sanders has served on numerous non-profit boards, including, but not limited to, the United Way of Lubbock and the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce.

In 2004, Sanders was selected as the 10th most influential member of the Lubbock community in a “straw poll” of several hundred citizens.  In 2005, he was honored by the Lubbock League of Women Voters for his contributions to the community.  Contact Lubbock, a crisis intervention organization, presented Sanders with its “Friend of Contact” award in 2001, only the fourth time in the organization’s more than 30-year history that it had bestowed that honor on a volunteer.  He also has been honored by the Women’s Protective Services, a shelter for abused women, for his fund-raising efforts on that group’s behalf.

Sanders has lived in Lubbock since 1969 and is a graduate of Texas Tech University.
